Why Understanding Generator Set Power Ratings Matters: Common Power vs. Standby Power

When customers inquire about generator sets, one of the most common misunderstandings lies in the concept of power rating—specifically, the difference between common power (also known as prime power) and standby power (or maximum power).

Many domestic dealers or resellers tend to quote generator set power based on standby power, which is the maximum output the generator can deliver for a short period. However, at Sinooutput, we quote based on common power, which is the reliable continuous power output a generator can maintain under standard operating conditions.

This distinction is critical. For example, a generator set with a common power of 150kW would typically have a standby power of around 170–180kW. If a customer only provides a power figure (say, “150kW”) without specifying the type, there can be a mismatch in expectations. This could lead to either underpowered systems or unnecessary cost increases due to over-specification.

Moreover, the difference between standby and common power is not just about numbers—it affects diesel engine selection, generator sizing, and total system cost. Taking Cummins as an example: a 120kW common power generator may require a different engine model than a 120kW standby power unit. The choice could increase the overall cost by 10% to 20%, especially for large generator sets, whether they are used on land or on ships.

At Sinooutput, our goal is always to recommend generator sets that meet the actual working demand. We prioritize common power to ensure stable, sufficient performance, not just theoretical maximums.

For customers, it's extremely helpful to clarify the intended power rating when requesting a quotation. If a specific model from another supplier is mentioned, we can provide an equivalent or upgraded solution with better performance and cost-efficiency.

Understanding these differences helps avoid miscommunication, ensures reliable operation, and supports long-term value for your investment.
